Freedom of Thought

Conference Date

In volume 37:1, authors explore a range of questions about the idea of freedom of thought and expression, broadly construed. How does a free society avoid stifling open inquiry? If we are to live in a free country, how responsible do we have to be? How tactful and forgiving do we have to be? There is something virtuous about diplomacy and avoiding offense to others: this may imply that there are lines that should not be crossed. When, if ever, does speech cross the line? What about failing to speak? When does calling for the censoring of opposing views cross the line?
